Uganda Partners with UAE Business Association to Build New International Airport
KAMPALA, June 24 – Uganda has taken a significant step towards enhancing its aviation infrastructure by signing an agreement with a business association from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to construct a new international airport. This ambitious project is expected to bolster Uganda’s economic growth, improve connectivity, and attract foreign investment.
The agreement, signed in Kampala, involves the Ugandan government and the UAE Business Association, a consortium of prominent Emirati companies specializing in infrastructure and aviation. The project, estimated to cost around $500 million, aims to address the increasing demand for air travel and facilitate smoother international trade and tourism.
Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, expressed optimism about the partnership. “This new airport will be a game-changer for Uganda’s connectivity with the world. It will not only ease the pressure on Entebbe International Airport but also serve as a catalyst for economic growth,” he said during the signing ceremony. “We are grateful to our UAE partners for their commitment to this transformative project.”
The new airport, to be located in the oil-rich region of Hoima, is part of Uganda’s broader infrastructure development strategy. The government aims to enhance its transport network to support the burgeoning oil and gas sector and promote regional development. The airport is expected to include state-of-the-art facilities, including modern passenger terminals, cargo handling areas, and maintenance services.
Representatives from the UAE Business Association emphasized the strategic importance of the project. “Uganda presents a wealth of opportunities, and we are keen to invest in its future. This airport will not only improve connectivity but also foster stronger economic ties between our nations,” said Ahmed Al Mansoori, a senior official from the association.
The partnership reflects a growing trend of UAE investments in African infrastructure projects. The UAE has been expanding its footprint in Africa, recognizing the continent’s potential for growth and development. This collaboration with Uganda underscores the mutual benefits of such investments, combining Uganda’s developmental goals with the UAE’s expertise and capital.
Economic analysts have welcomed the project, highlighting its potential to create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and boost tourism. The construction phase alone is expected to generate thousands of jobs, while the operational airport will create ongoing employment opportunities in various sectors.
Environmental concerns have also been addressed, with both parties committing to sustainable practices throughout the project’s lifecycle. The airport will incorporate eco-friendly technologies and adhere to international environmental standards to minimize its impact on the local ecosystem.
As Uganda and the UAE Business Association embark on this ambitious project, the new international airport promises to be a cornerstone of Uganda’s economic future, enhancing its global connectivity and opening new avenues for growth and development.
